Aug 03, 2009 (LBO) - A professional body representing Sri Lanka's transport and logistics sector said it plans to get industry professionals together to lobby for better connectivity and less red tape. "With the end of 30 years of turmoil we're now in a position to contribute significantly to develop many areas affected by war."

Harper said logistics is critical not only to improve economic efficiencies but to aid in the recovery of the economy.

"We form a very critical part in any economy," he said. "Transport and logistics, if not effective and efficient, then neither is the economy.

"If we don’t do well, the country does not do well, people don’t do well." The end of the island's ethnic war, with government forces defeating the Tamil Tigers in May, should pave the way for an economic revival in which logistics would play a key role, officials said.

Len Harper, president of the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport, said the organisation was well-placed to act as a voice for the industry.

"Your economy is stable, you got over your problems, the world is waiting for you to move," he told a forum organised by the Sri Lanka branch of the institute which groups profess
