Sri Lanka's Energy Minister, Engineer Kumara Jayakody, reaffirmed the government's commitment to fully harness the wind power generation potential of the Mannar region, aiming to overcome the nation's energy challenges through strategic investment and the adoption of new technologies. The Minister's statement came during a comprehensive visit to proposed and operational wind power plant sites in the area.
Minister Jayakody emphasized the government's long-standing plan, formulated upon assuming power, to leverage Mannar's significant wind resources. He highlighted the importance of encouraging both local and foreign investment, alongside the integration of cutting-edge technologies, to achieve energy self-sufficiency.
During his tour, the Minister inspected the allocated site for the proposed 100 MW Mullikulam Wind Power Plant, for which tenders have already been invited, signaling the government's proactive approach to expanding its renewable energy portfolio. He also visited the Thambapani Wind Power Plant, currently operated by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), where he engaged in discussions with senior officials to assess its operations and explore avenues for further optimization.
A key focus of the Minister's visit was also the upcoming 50-megawatt Hayleys Fentons wind farm. Minister Jayakody inspected the designated area for this new project, which is slated to be built adjacent to existing facilities. He noted that the new government has secured a minimum purchase price of 4.65 US cents for the power generated by this farm, a move that is expected to encourage further private sector participation in the country's renewable energy drive.
