Sri Lanka police find haul of land mines
Aug 4, 2006 (AFP) – Sri Lankan police Friday found a large haul of land mines and grenades and arrested two men who were transporting the cargo deep into a plantation in the island’s south, officials said.
Police found 18 Claymore mines, 15 hand grenades, three automatic assault rifles and 100 detonators hidden inside a truck that was subjected to a routine check at Karandeniya, about 120 kilometres (75 miles) south of here.
“An investigation is underway,” a police official in the area said.
“We have taken the crew of the truck into custody and they are being questioned.
“
Tamil Tiger rebels are known to use Claymore mines in their battle against security forces while the guerrillas have also been accused of using suicide bombers against high-profile targets in recent months.
