Sri Lanka to raise minimum wage

May 27, 2008 (LBO) – Sri Lanka employers grouping, unions and the government are in discussions to raise minimum wages in the country, an official said Tuesday. Deputy director general of the Employers' Federation of Ceylon Kanishka Weerasinghe said discussions have started with the department of labour and other stakeholders for around three dozen types of trades.

"A proposed increased in wages will be in respect minimum wages," Seneviratne said.

"And the process is now being carried out through the Wages Board mechanism."

Sri Lanka raised minimum wages through the Wages Board last year effective from May 01.

Stakeholders would have a chance of making representations at the discussions.
