Daily Power Cuts Proposed Starting Today as NSO Seeks PUCSL Approval
The National System Operator (Private) Limited (NSO) has formally requested approval from the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) to implement daily one-hour scheduled power cuts starting today, continuing through October 21.
The proposal was confirmed by Buddhika Samarasekara, Chief Executive Officer of National System Operator (Pvt) Ltd.
The power interruptions are proposed to take place between 4:30 PM and 8:30 PM each evening to compensate for a severe generation deficit. Peak evening demand is currently projected at 2,800 MW, while total available supply capacity stands at only 2,500 MW, leaving a 300 MW deficit.
To manage the power rationing, the island will be divided into 4 operational zones, with rotational load shedding scheduled across each area once final regulatory approval is granted by the PUCSL.
