April 25, 2008 (LBO) – Vendors selling fake ink cartridges in Sri Lanka under the Toshiba trademark are being hunted and prosecuted, regional Toshiba officials said in Colombo. The technology firm will prosecute vendors importing and selling counterfeit Toshiba products under the Intellectual Property Laws in Sri Lanka, Jeevantha Jayatilake, legal representative for Toshiba in Sri Lanka said.

If found guilty, vendors face a two-year jail term or a fine of 500,000 rupees, or both, Jayatilake said.

The company has raided shops and has filed four law suits in which defendants of two suits have pleaded guilty, he said.

Toshiba estimates counterfeit toners make up nearly ten percent of the one billion rupee annual sales of toner and copiers sales in Sri Lanka.

Counterfeiters have the technology to even produce a holographic sticker that changes colour when looked at from different angles, a representatives of Toshiba Singapore said.

The company has now built chips into the toners to enable vendors and buyers distinguish authentic toners from the counterfeits, officials said.
