Toll Collection

Nov 04, 2010 (LBO) - Sri Lanka Telecom is on track to get a deal to install a fibre optic cable for a toll collection system on an expressway linking the island's south that is now under construction. These will be in the towns of Konawa, Kahatuduwa, Gelanigama, Dodangoda, Welipenna, Kurundugahahetekma, Nayapamula, Pinnaduwa, Deegoda, Kokmaduwa and Godagamuwa. Media minister Keheliya Rambukwelle said the southern expressway is designed as an access controlled toll expressway for its entire length of 126 kilometres.

"The Cabinet has approved the allocation of funds to lay a fibre optic cable network in order to facilitate the toll system," he told a news conference.

The highways ministry is to invite technical and financial proposals to install a fibre optic cable network by Sri Lanka Telecom, according to a decision by the cabinet of ministers.

SLT is the dominant fixed line operator in the country and is 51 percent owned by the state.

The southern highway, largely funded by the Asian Development Bank and Japan, will have only 11 access ramps, Rambukwelle said.
