July 16, 2008 (LBO) – Australian police have arrested the director of a Melbourne business school over links with Tamil Tigers following a request from US authorities, a media report said. The Australian newspaper said Thulasitharan Santhirarajah, 34, is expected to be extradited to the United States.
“The man is wanted to face prosecution for alleged terrorism offences in the United States of America,” The Australian quoted Robert McClelland, a spokesman for the attorney general’s office, as saying.
The newspaper said in addition to Santhirarajah’s Melbourne International College, Australian federal police had raided five properties and businesses in Narre Warren, Dandenong and Lysterfield areas.
Two other Melbourne men, charged with fund-raising for Tamil Tigers in 2006, were also awaiting trial, the report said.
