Aug 14, 2008 (LBO) – Sri Lanka will issue special coins commemorating the runner-up of the last cricket world cup, an official said. Sri Lanka’s central bank will issue a Nickel plated steel coin with a denomination of 5 rupees and depicting a bowler.
A brass plated steel coin with a face value of 1,000 rupees will also be issued at a market price of 1,500 rupees.
Officials are hoping to issue the coin on August 18 when the Sri Lanka-India one day international match starts in the central town of Dambulla.
Another coin to commemorate the 50 year anniversary of the Employees Provident Fund of Sri Lanka is also being planned, officials said.
Sri Lanka’s central bank recently opened an on line sales counter for commemorative and old coins.
