Sri Lankan aviation authorities have cleared Abu Dhabi based industry newcomer, Etihad Airways to fly daily to Colombo from March 03.
Area Manager for Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Kumar de Silva says Etihad will take off with three weekly fights to Colombo with the main stray of initial sales coming from the migrant labour population. rn
rnThe airline hopes to attract other segments of the market and also promote Sri Lanka as a destination in the Middle East.rn
rnThe Middle Eastern airlines arrival comes as other carriers charting the route currently are rethinking their strategy as the route becomes increasingly congested. rn
rnOfficials say the once lucrative labour travel market to and from the Middle East is now under stiff competition, increasing pricing pressure and making them uneconomical.rn
rnMeanwhile, attracting Sri Lankans to fly Etihad, the airline will roll out promotional airfares during its first month of operations and extra baggage allowances which stretch up to 50 kilos.rn
