US courier giant Federal Express Corp (Fedex) Thursday raised their profile in Sri Lanka by formally announcing a partnership with conglomerate, the Hayleys Group. Fedex, currently commands the second slot in Sri Lanka’s 1,000-metric tonne or million kilos courier market, officials said.

“We hope the relationship will propel Fedex to the top slot within a short span of time,” Hayleys Chairman Rajan Yatawara told reporters.

Hayleys, a centuries old conglomerate, has diversified interest in rubber, coir, activated carbon, agriculture, leisure, textiles and transport.

“The courier business was the missing link to our rather diversified logistics and transport business,” says Yatawara.

The alliance with Fedex, comes through a 50:50 joint venture with a local firm — Mountain Hawk Express — and Yatawara declined to specify the quantum invested.

Mountain Hawk Express earlier had the licence to operate Fedex in Sri Lanka for the past 18-years.
