“Electronic clearance of imports was not possible because ship’s agents and other government bodies were not ready,” said Director General of Customs, Sarath Jayatilake.
“But we will go ahead with it, starting from this week anyway,” said Jayatilake.
Customs has already selected around 40 importers for the special treatment based on volume of customs declarations and tax payments.
“These importers account for around 20 percent of total Cusdecs and around 20 percent of import duty,” said Jayatilake.
The selected companies can submit Customs declarations electronically and will have their cargo cleared under green channel treatment.
