Jan 12, 2012 (LBO) – India will help rebuild 49,000 houses of war refugees and estate workers in Sri Lanka with a 260 million US dollar grant, information minister Keheliya Rambukwelle said. The Indian grant will be used in former war zones in the North and Eastern provinces of the island and in the Central and Uva provinces where plantation workers of Indian origin live.
About 38,000 war refugees who rebuild their own houses get about 5,000 US dollars. Others will be given money to repair their houses.
Sri Lanka’s cabinet of ministers had approved the signing of the agreement on a proposal put forward by President Mahinda Rajapaksa who is finance minister.
