Mobitel unveiled its ambitious plans and its new logo that will battle the elements to capture over one million customers before 2005.
Mobitel Chairman Thilanga Sumathipala told guests at the launch ceremony that internal estimates showed that the cellular market would reach three million customers within the next three years, with his firm servicing over one million subscribers.rn

rnThe firm will also look to spend an additional US$ 200 million on expanding its network across the island. rn

rnThe firm raised US$ 70 million earlier this year to fund its migration on to a GSM network that will have an initial capacity of 200,000 lines with 200,000 more added in early 2004. rn

rnMobitel officials say they could look at raising the money around the first quarter of 2004. rn

rnMeanwhile, Mobitel hopes to begin services to customers on its new GSM network by the end of October, with full scale commercial operations kicking off in November. rn
