Cellular operator Celtell Infinity’s service came to a standstill Wednesday, after an attempt to upgrade the software running its mobile network was unsuccessful. The software upgrade, expected to help enhance Celtell’s services, was scheduled for completion in the wee hours of Wednesday morning.

Celtell’s customer care officials say the system upgrade has hit a patch of “unexpected” problems and was taking longer than scheduled.

A return to normal service is expected at the end of the day.

The customer care centre added that only Colombo and pockets of its coverage areas were affected.

However, industry sources claim Celtell’s entire network, supporting some 500,000 mobile users were affected by Wednesday’s upgrade failure.

Celtell’s management was unavailable for comment.
