Ten flood damaged rural health centres in the Matara district were reopened for patients on Thursday, with a US$18,000 USAID aid injection for rehabilitation.
The rehabilitation of the health centres were initiated by a US$ 18,000 grant to the SouthernProvince Health Sector Authority of Matara, a US Embassy statement said.rn
rnThe grant also provided for essential pre and ante-natal maternity equipment, including scales,blood-pressure meters and examination beds.rn
rnSome 30,000 people will benefit from this grant, the statement said. rn
rn”This might look like a bricks-and-mortar project, but its also about building relationships among diverse groups of people committed to a common cause,” said Mr.Timothy Bertotti, at the inauguration of the health centre in Pallegama, Matara.rn
rnBertotti was commenting on the community involvement in the project in Pellegama that saw 10 youth volunteers and 60 Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim women helping in the reconstruction activities.rn
