Singapore family charged with maid abuse: report

SINGAPORE, March 11, 2008 (AFP) – A Singapore teenager and her family have been charged with physically assaulting an Indonesian maid, including pulling out her teeth and pouring hot wax on her, the Straits Times reported Tuesday. More than 140,000 domestic workers mainly from Indonesia, the Philippines and Sri Lanka, work in Singapore. Cases of employers abusing their maids appear often in the media. Office worker Nur Rizan Mohd Sazali, 18, was charged in a district court Monday for allegedly pulling out the maid’s teeth, the report said.

Her mother and brother as well as a family friend, who employed the maid, were also charged with various abusive acts towards the maid, including pouring hot wax on her head and scalding her private parts with hot water.

The alleged abuse took place last year, according to the report.

The district court could not immediately confirm the charges.

If convicted, all four each face jail terms of up to seven years.
