July 21, 2014 (LBO) – Asian Development Bank is financing a 30MegaWatt hydro plant with a 150 million US dollar credit, and the project will have measures to protect an endangered fish in the river. The Moragolla hydro power plant is estimated to generate 97.7 GigaWatt hours (millions of units of electricity) of energy a year, the ADB said.
It will be a run-of-the-river plant indicating minimal storage.
The ADB said the plant will contain measure to assure that water flowed downstream, so that fisheries including Green Labeo an endangered fish, was not harmed by the plant.
Moragolla is one of the last bigger hydro power stations that can be built on on Sri Lanka’s river systems.
