Sri Lanka ready to select new legislators for Parliament : Nominations closed


July 13, 2015 (LBO) – Acceptance of nominations for the forthcoming General Election which is to be held on 17 August 2015, ended today at 12.00 noon, the Elections Department announced.

The nomination list of the United National Party showed that Champika Ranawaka, Mano Ganeshan and Western Provincial Councilor Hirunika Premachandra are among those contesting under the elephant symbol from Colombo district.

According to the nomination list of United People’s Freedom Alliance, Udaya Gammanpila, Rohitha Bogollagama and Jayantha Ketagoda are among those contesting from Colombo district.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe is contesting from Colombo district and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa from Kurunegala district.

Both Namal Rajapaksa and Chamal Rajapaksa are fighting for a seat from Hambantota district under the betel leaf.

Former SLFP member S.B Nawinna is contesting under elephant symbol from Kurunegala district.

Controversial character Nishantha Muthuhettigamage’s name is also included in the UPFA nomination list of Galle district.

Apart from those included in the nomination lists of each district, several others are to be appointed through the National lists of respective political parties.

Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thero and Karu Jayasuriya are among those waiting to be appointed to the Parliament through the national list of UNP.

Most of the senior SLFP members are to be appointed through the national list.

JVP national list includes former Auditor General S.C Mayadunne and senior Attorney at law Krishmal Warnasooriya.

The list also included four professors and five university lecturers.

Meanwhile former Parliamentarians Duminda Silva, Mervin Silva, Sarana Gunawardena and Sajin Vass Gunawardena have not been given nominations from UPFA.

However there are reports that former Parliamentarian Duminda Silva is set to contest under an independent ground from the Colombo district.
