Sri Lankan boxers disappear in Germany

Sept 27, 2006 (AFP) - Two Sri Lankan boxers taking part in the world military championships in Germany have fled their hotel after eluding security, officials said here on Wednesday.

The duo identified as W.R.G.G. Weligalla and P.W.R.D. Fernando of the Sri Lanka army were part of a seven-member squad at the World Military Boxing Championships which ended on Sunday.

"Both of them had run away from the team hotel a day prior to the conclusion of the games," an official who accompanied the team told AFP.


Weligalla was considered a bright prospect while Fernando won the bronze in the lightweight category at last month's South Asian Games here.

The local officials are baffled by the disappearance as the players' passports are usually kept by team management on tours.

The officials, who returned to the island on Tuesday, said the Sri Lankan embassy in Germany had been informed of the incident.

A Sri Lankan boxer had previously gone missing in Canada and then the country's entire handball team disappeared in Germany in September 2004.
