Weak Link

Sri Lanka Telecom’s internet link collapsed late Saturday, when a ship damaged its undersea cable. Sri Lanka Telecom’s internet link collapsed late Saturday, when a ship damaged its undersea cable. The SEA-ME-WE III (South East Asia Middle East Western Europe) links Sri Lanka with the outside world through a landing point in Mount Lavinia.

SLT officials say it could take around two to three days to repair the damaged link.

To tide over the crisis, SLT has given limited capacity through a satellite uplink.

The fibre optic cable link supports 40Gbps bandwidth with two fiber pairs using SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) covering 41 landing points in 35 countries.
