“It is also important that post-tsunami reconstruction is consistent with the poverty reduction agenda for the country as a whole,” Patel said in a World Bank statement on Friday.

“The Bank looks forward to a good discussion at the Forum on how Sri Lanka can partner with the international community to substantially improve the lives of the four million or so poor who constitute the most vulnerable segment of the country’s population.”

Sri Lanka is hosting a Development Forum on May 16 and 17 in Kandy, where donors will follow up on tsunami reconstruction and set plans for the future.

“Through this we can hope to overcome constraints in such areas as getting people back into homes and back to work, and restoring their access to essential services, such
as health, education and water,” the World Bank said in a statement.
