PM reveals progress of Presidential Commission of Inquiry

Mar 09, 2017 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s Presidential Commission of Inquiry has carried out in-depth investigations into 400 complaints to date and investigations into 49 complaints have been finalized, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe revealed.



The special commission was appointed by President Maithripala Sirisena on March 3rd, 2015 to investigate and inquire into serious acts of fraud, corruption and abuse of power, state resources and privileges.



Wickremesinghe told Parliament Thursday that the commission has so far received a total of 1,599 complaints.



“After initial inquiries 1,180 complaints have been dropped from further investigations, and 400 complaints have been forwarded to the investigation officers of the commission,” Wickremesinghe said. Wickremesinghe said the commission has finalized investigations into 49 cases and nine final reports made.





“After the investigations 193 complaints were considered that need no further action.

158 investigations are yet to be completed.” “Completed investigation on SriLankan Airlines and SriLankan Catering have now been forwarded to the bribery commission as well as to the Attorney General.” He said the investigation on Rakna Lanka has also forwarded to the bribery commission. The Presidential Secretariat Office recently announced that the term of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry investigating into large scale corruption and fraud has been extended by six months.
