Taxpayers will be called up to pay around six billion rupees to train over 40,000 unemployable graduates over a two year period, the government said Wednesday.
An election promise to absorb 27,000 unemployed graduates, got a mammoth response from over 52,000 applicants.
Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama says only 48,000 applicants passed through the initial screening process and the first batch of 17,000 names will be advertised on Thursday.
“They will be paid Rs. 6,000 for a two-year probationary period,” Amunugama told a news conference.
