SAGT said in its statement that container volumes for the first six months of 2009, at 809,246 TEUs, were still 4.45 percent lower than that handled in the same period of 2008.


Overall volumes in Colombo port for the first half of 2009 have dropped by 9.

South Asia Gateway Terminals (SAGT) said in a statement it handled 156,122 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units or containers) in June 2009, its highest ever throughput in a single month, surpassing the previous high of 155,506 TEUs in September 2008.

The recovery in volumes came despite a continuing slump in trade and container traffic through Colombo port caused by the global recession, it said.
