"Global trade is bouncing back (from recession) and there's a continuous need to enhance port capacity," Priyath Wickrama, chairman of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) said.

Global port cargo throughput reflected the manner in which the global economy had bounced back from the recession two years ago, he told the 13th conference on International Network of Affiliated Ports (INAP) being held in Colombo during August 24-25.

It is attended by officials from six countries representing the ports of Colombo, port of Kochi in Japan, ports of Subic Bay and Cebu in the Philippines, Tanjung Perak in Indonesia, port of Mokpo in South Korea and China.




Wickrama said the SLPA was in the middle of a massive port expansion project aimed at making the island a logistics hub for the region.


These included new deep-water ports next to the existing one in Colombo as well as in southern Hambantota, close to the main trade route.
