Sri Lanka to get US emergency food aid

7 billion rupees) worth of food aid for Sri Lanka to the United Nations World Food Program (WFP). USAID said its donation supports the WFP Protracted Relief and Recovery Operation (PRRO) titled Food for Peacebuilding and Recovery in Conflict-Affected Areas.







It helps the government in feeding 1.1 million people through emergency feeding and recovery programs including food-for-education, food-for-work, and mother-and-child health and nutrition.

The food, consisting of wheat, lentils and vegetable oil, will be distributed to a large number of displaced and conflict-affected people in the northern and eastern parts of Sri Lanka, the aid agency said in a statement.

It said the food aid is scheduled to arrive in June 2009 and would be enough to feed 300,000 people over four months.

USAID Mission Director Rebecca Cohn said the donation represents about 21 percent of the total food aid that WFP has called for this year to meet the needs of refugees and other conflict-affected people in Sri Lanka.
