Sri Lanka Thursday urged civil servants to work an extra hour saying it had the “dubious honour” of being the nation with the world’s highest number of public holidays. Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera told reporters here Sri Lanka topped the world with 26 public holidays on top of a five-day week and another 45 days of annual leave.

“Can a country ever develop with this many holidays?” Samaraweera said adding he expected public sector workers to “volunteer” and extend their work-day by one hour to nine hours.

Samaraweera said the government studied the holidays of 165 countries and found Sri Lanka was on top with 26 public holidays. Nepal was number two with 24, he said.

Sri Lanka has just over a million public servants and the previous government had proposed to cut a third of them as part of an ambitious program to improve productivity. However, the plan had been rolled back by the new government. (AFP)
