Sri Lanka Thursday urged civil servants to work an extra hour saying it had the "dubious honour" of being the nation with the world's highest number of public holidays. " Samaraweera said adding he expected public sector workers to "volunteer" and extend their work-day by one hour to nine hours.
Samaraweera said the government studied the holidays of 165 countries and found Sri Lanka was on top with 26 public holidays. Nepal was number two with 24, he said.
Sri Lanka has just over a million public servants and the previous government had proposed to cut a third of them as part of an ambitious program to improve productivity.
