Officials say the next PC sold in the market could come with Sinhalese language capabilities and a local language keyboard. In a beta version released in late October, the hundreds of character combinations that make the Sinhalese vocabulary has been pieced together to make a MS office compatible language pack.

Developers hope the final version would be coupled with Microsoft’s next Windows operating system.

The beta will test usability and find bug before a final version, ready to be packaged with Microsoft’s next version operating system is released.

ICT Agency’s Programme Director Dr. Gihan Dias told Lanka Business Online on Monday that already a second version, with most of the initial bugs killed, is already ready for release.

The test version, downloadable at www.
fonts.lk currently only works with Microsoft’s Windows XP and Windows 2003.

A series of accessories to support the Sinhalese language pack, including keyboards have also been developed, says Dr.
Dias.
