Government negotiators have finalised a deal with Emirates to partially lift monopolies enjoyed by the national carrier.
Secretary to the Ministry of Aviation Cecil Amaresinghe told LBR that under the recent MOU SriLankan Airlines would lose some monopolies that it would have otherwise enjoyed till 2008. rn

rnHowever, some aspects of the monopolies will remain with SriLankan.rn

rnldblquote Emirates have given up exclusivity to catering and have allowed limited self-handling and cargo handling. Now we are in the process of amending the side agreements so that these options can be made use of as soon as possible,

rnOther airlines will now be able to handle their own catering, cargo and ground handling from August this year.rn

rnHowever, Amaresinghe said that there would be restrictions on the number of players allowed to provide these services.rn
