Bunker Biz

July 27, 2011 (LBO) – Mc Marine (Pvt) Ltd, a newly incorporated bunkering unit of Sri Lanka’s McLarens shipping group which is planning to cater to ships off the south of the island, has recruited Channa Abeyagunewardena as its chief executive. Sri Lanka started to make greater inroads into bunkering after a state monopoly and later a private monopoly in bunkering was broken in Colombo making it more competitive.

McMarine Pvt Ltd will focus on bunkering opportunities in and off Hambantota while Interocean Energy, which is already offering bunker services in Colombo, will improve its services and consolidate its position. Abeyagunewardena has also been appointed as a director of the group’s Colombo based bunkering unit Interocean Energy Pvt Ltd.

He was earlier with Lanka Maritime Services Ltd which operates from Colombo.

Sri Lanka’s government is positioning Hambantota as a major bunker and ship servicing hub in the Indian Ocean. Abeyagunewardena said Mc Marine is planning to partner the government in the move.
