Election law violations in Sri Lanka cross 900 incidents; Western Province leads: PAFFREL


Aug 10, 2015 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s election watchdog PAFFREL says the organization has received 915 complaints in relation to 972 electoral and general law violations by yesterday afternoon.

Among them, 114 are related to acts of violence and 132 incidents of electoral or general law violations.

As per the PAFFREL statistical report of election law violations which covers the pre election period, a total of 49 hospitalizations have been reported to date.

Two killings and 27 grievous assaults were among 132 acts of violence related violations.

123 violations relating to abuse of state power, resources and misusing state sector employees have also been reported.

There were 717 other violations including 453 incidents of carrying out illegal election propaganda, the report showed.

Most number of complaints received from Western Province (194) where 98 incidents were reported from Colombo district.

171 complaints from Southern Province and 123 complaints from North Western Province have also been reported.

North central Province reports least number of cases with 48 incidents.

Out of total 972 reported incidents, 645 incidents were confirmed incidents, PAFFREL further said.
