Higher voter turnout in Sri Lanka’s Presidential Election

Jan 08, 2015 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s voter turnout exceeded 70 percent in Kalutara, Nuwara Eliya, Matara and Ratnapura districts, Election Returning Office (ERO) said. Kalutha has reported 70 percent while Nuwara Eliya is 80 percent, Matara 73 percent, Trincomalee 72 percent Ratnapura 84 percent Kegalle 75 percent, kandy 76 percent, Galle 73 percent Puttalam 71 percent, Anuradhapura 76 percent.

President Rajapaksa is contesting for a third term seeking back another term in office. He is challenged by former Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena, who defected to the opposition.

A total 15,044,490 voters have been registered for the election, while 12,314 polling stations are set up in the 22 administrative districts and more than 70,000 policemen are on duty for the day.
