February 9 (LBO) – Three ministers in President Mahinda Rajapakse’s government has been removed from their posts, officials and state television said. Anura Bandaranaike lost the tourism ministry in last month’s cabinet re-shuffle and has been publicly expressing his displeasure.
Bandaranaike is former President Chandrika Kumaratunga’s brother.
Sri Lanka Freedom Party strongman Mangala Samaraweera who held the foreign minister’s portfolio before a recent cabinet re-shuffle, Anura Bandaranaike and Sripathi Suriyarachchi had been sacked, state television said.
The sacking has brought into the open simmering discontent within President Rajapakse’s Sri Lanka Freedom Party.
Internal rumblings intensified after a parliamentarians who crossed over from the opposition were given portfolios taken from ruling party members.
Samaraweera lost the foreign ministry to a parliamentarian elected on the opposition United National Party who crossed over soon after Rajapakse won office.
