President appoints and CC approves Judge Nalin Perera as the 46th Chief Justice of Sri Lanka

October 13, 2018 (LBO) - President Maithripala Sirisena has appointed and the Constitutional Council has confirmed the new 46th Chief Justice (CJ). The collaborative process enshrined in Sri Lanka's reformed constitution seemed to work flawlessly, resulting in a new CJ appointed through a highly regarded mechanism. Chief Justice Nalin Perera has spent close to 4 decades on the bench.  Media reports have stated that he is 64 years of age.

If the reports are accurate then Constitutionally he will have to retire by age 65, leaving President Sirisena a chance to appoint another Chief Justice before his presidential term comes to an end. The retirement of former Chief Justice Priyasath Depp has created a vacancy on the Supreme Court which the President will also have to fill.
