Apr 20, 2012 (LBO) – China’s Sinohydro Corp. has won a 252 million US dollar contract to build a dam providing water and hydropower in north-central Sri Lanka. A statement said the decision to award the contract to build the headworks of Moragahakanda Reservoir to the Chinese state-owned hydropower engineering and construction company was made by the Cabinet of ministers this week.
The project will meet the long term demand for domestic and industrial water needs in the North Central, Northern and Eastern Provinces, it said.
The project will also generate 20 mega watts of power and provide water for around 68,000 hectares of cultivable land including 3,000 hectares of new lands.
