Sri Lanka-born top international designer Balmond in JKH resort


Aug 02, 2013 (LBO) – Balmond Studio Limited, a UK-based firm founded by Sri Lanka-born Cecil Balmond has designed John Keells Holding’s 820 million dollar casino resort development, the company said. The second phase involves a 200 unit apartment block and a 400,000 square feet office tower.

JKH said its integrated resort will cater to the “growing mobility and spending power” of South Asian regional travellers and the growing demand for entertainment, gaming and retail from the Middle East, India and East Asia.

The project will boost industries ranging from leisure, entertainment, food and beverage, consumer durables, travel and financial services.

Balmond currently holds the Paul Philippe chair at Penn Design as Professor of Architecture at University of Pennyslvania, USA and was deputy chairman of Arup UK, a top engineering consulting firm, JKH told shareholders in a circular.

Under his direction Arup had designed China’s CCTV Tower, London’s Serpentine Pavilion. Arcelor Mittal Orbit, a 120 metre sculpture for the 2012 Olympics.
