Sri Lanka cabinet grants approval to amend Muslim Marriage & Divorce Act

Aug 21, 2019 (LBO) – Sri Lanka's Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to amend the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act.

The proposal contains amendments to the Act including the legal age for a Muslim marriage (minimum age 18) and the process that should be followed when registering a marriage.

There are also proposals to get the signature of the bride as consent when registering a marriage.

The proposal jointly presented by Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs Minister Abdul Haleem and Justice Minister Thalatha Atukorale will be forwarded to the legal draftsman for necessary measures.

Muslim community and Human Rights activists were of the view that amendments required to be made to the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act.
