Sri Lanka Customs to get modern container scanning facility; dock yard for Hambantota Port

July 23, 2015 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s cabinet has approved a proposal to install a modern container scanning system at Sri Lanka Customs with the view of improving the efficiency and productivity of Customs.

The proposal has been made by Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake to implement the system through a partnership with the private sector.

Sri Lanka Customs processes an average of about 1,100 import containers per day.

Only about 10 percent to 15 percent of randomly selected containers are subjected to x-ray scanning using the department owned scanners that are about 8 years old.

Meanwhile the Cabinet has taken note of a report submitted by Ports Minister Arjuna Ranatunge to look into the possibility of constructing a naval dock yard at the Hambantota Port.

The report also included steps being taken to prepare streamlined plans in this connection and to undertake necessary feasibility studies.
