Sri Lanka is pushing for greater access to the lucrative Thai fruit market, with Ambassador C.A. Chaminda I. Colonne recently meeting with Deputy Director-General of the Department of Agriculture Dr. Pongthai Thaiyothin to discuss progress on an application to export five unique Sri Lankan fruits.
The December 20th meeting, held at the Department of Agriculture in Bangkok, focused on securing market entry for fresh fire coconut, wood apple, pineapple, dragon fruit, and Scotch Bonnet pepper.
Ambassador Colonne also emphasized the importance of speeding up the implementation of two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) signed between the two countries in 2004: one on Agricultural Cooperation and another on Cooperation on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures.
The discussion saw active participation from senior officials of the Thai Department of Agriculture and Vireshika Bandara, First Secretary (Commercial) at the Sri Lankan Embassy in Thailand.
