Sri Lanka inflation marginally down in June 2020

Jul 02, 2020 (LBO) - The year on year inflation as measured by the
Colombo Consumer Price Index (CCPI) is 3.9 percent in June 2020 and inflation calculated for May 2020 was 4.0 percent, a new report shows.

The CCPI for all items for the month of June 2020 was 135.3 and it recorded an increase of 1.1 index points that is 0.82 percentage points compared to the month of May 2020 for which the index was 134.2, data from the state statistics office said.

Year on year inflation of food group has increased from 9.9 percent in May 2020 to 10.0 percent in June 2020 while that of the non‐food group has decreased from 1.6 percent in May 2020 to 1.4 percent in June 2020.

For the month of June 2020, on year‐to‐year basis, contribution to inflation by food commodities was 2.91 percent.

The contribution of non food items was 0.99 percent. This was mainly due to increases in value change in groups of ‘housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels’ (0.54%), ‘education’ (0.36%), ‘transport’ (0.26%), ‘clothing and footwear’ (0.13%), ‘restaurants & hotels’ (0.08%), ‘miscellaneous goods and services’ (0.05%) and decrease in value change was reported for the groups of ‘communication’ (0.32%), ‘health’ (0.06%), ‘furnishing household equipment and routine household maintenance’ (0.04%) and ‘recreation and culture’ (0.01%).

An insignificant value change was reported for the group of ‘alcoholic beverages tobacco and narcotics’.
