Sri Lanka’s JVP demands President reveals Hambantota port agreement

Hambantota-port

Dec 27, 2016 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s Marxist JVP today insisted the President should reveal the Hambantota port agreement to the country before signing the agreement with China. Writing a letter to the President, JVP Parliamentarian and COPE Chairman Sunil Handunnetti said their party is strongly against what they called ‘selling’ the port which is property of the people of Sri Lanka. Handunnetti said in his letter that Prime Minister has already told that Hambantota port will be leased out to a Chinese firm for a 99 year old lease on the 07 January 2017. According to JVP this port is not only an important part of geopolitics but also a part of Sri Lanka’s maritime and national security. “Now only two weeks left; but people don’t know about the agreement; not even the Parliament,” Handunnetti said. “We don’t know why these secret agreements are not considered as ‘deals’.” As per the details revealed so far, Sri Lanka will finalize the agreement with regard to leasing 80 percent of its loss-making 1.4 billion US dollars harbour to a Chinese company. The Chinese had initially wanted the port on a 199-year lease and later reduced to 99 year lease. Members of SLFP are currently protesting against the lease period and Sri Lanka’s share holding over the port. Certain SLFP members inside party meetings have insisted that the President reduces the lease period to 33 years and the share percentage to 65 percent for China.
