May 19, 2007 (LBO) – Information technology has a component that gives the technology a competitive advantage in business, IT specialists say. That component gets commoditised but companies must come up with new components to stay on the top, they say.

œThere is definitely a component of IT which is really giving the competitive advantage to the company," Sriyan De Silva Wijeratne, Country Manager, Microsoft Sri Lanka, told the 2nd LBR LBO Chief Information Officer forum held on Wednesday in Colombo.

"But that’s a dynamic component and the competitive edge of today, after a while, moves into commodity.

Sri Lankan companies still spend large amounts of money on this ˜commodity’ without creating a dynamic component to suit the company, the specialists say.

The commodity is part technology, part core structure of a system - such as an automated banking system - which can be evolved by innovative means.

Companies will invest in this ˜commodity’ to run their business on.

More innovative companies will develop a better component to get the competitive edge for the company and use the old commodity as a
