Cabinet cleared four amendments to the Shop and Office Act, supporting nighttime employment and an increase in workman compensation.
If passed in Parliament in May, shops can remain open past 10 pm, while female workers will be allowed to work late nights, Labour Minister, Mahinda Samarasinghe told journalists.rn
rnThe amendments also support employing female staff on 24-hour shifts, a change vital to develop the Call Centre industry. rn
rnExisting laws make it difficult to retain female staff after 8pm. rn
rnMeanwhile, compensation for employees will increase to a maximum of Rs. 500,000.rn
rnIn addition, the three-day wait (from the day of the unfortunate incident) to apply and receive compensation will be brought down to same day settlement system. rn
rnMeanwhile, ten Asian nations will band together to improve skills, working conditions and logistics of migrant workers in the region. rn
rnSri Lanka will host the first of the annual session on April 1 and 2, Samarasinghe said. rn
