The US Embassy investigated 987 suspicious applications this year out of 13,000 immigrant and non-immigrant applications for US visa.
“Some applicants misrepresent themselves, present false documents or otherwise attempt to defraud the Consular section in order to obtain a visa,” said the statement from the US Embassy.
Out of the 58 arrests made this year on attempted visa fraud, 4 were marriage fraud, 12 involved employment fraud, 4 were student visa applications and 6 applicants violated Sri Lankan immigration law.
In 2004, the US Embassy investigations resulted in 84 arrests of visa applicants.
