The US Embassy says 59 Sri Lankans were arrested this year so far, on attempted visa fraud. The US Embassy investigated 987 suspicious applications this year out of 13,000 immigrant and non-immigrant applications for US visa.
“Some applicants misrepresent themselves, present false documents or otherwise attempt to defraud the Consular section in order to obtain a visa,” said the statement from the US Embassy.
Out of the 58 arrests made this year on attempted visa fraud, 4 were marriage fraud, 12 involved employment fraud, 4 were student visa applications and 6 applicants violated Sri Lankan immigration law.
In 2004, the US Embassy investigations resulted in 84 arrests of visa applicants.
