Pakistan cricket chief offers resignation

ISLAMABAD, March 20, 2007 (AFP) - Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Naseem Ashraf has offered his resignation to President Pervez Musharraf following the national team's disastrous exit from the World Cup, a spokesman said Tuesday.

Pakistan's chief cricket selector and the rest of the national selection committee have also stepped down, the PCB said as the fallout from Saturday's humiliating defeat to Ireland continued.

"Chairman Mr. Naseem Ashraf has confirmed that he has sent his resignation to the patron of the PCB," Ahsan Malik, the board's communications director told AFP. Musharraf is the patron of PCB.

"He told me on the telephone that he has faxed his resignation last night and it's now up to the patron whether he accepts it or not," Malik said.

There was no word from Musharraf on whether he would accept the resignation of Ashraf, who only took over the job some six months ago.


Separately a PCB statement said chief selector Wasim Bari had tendered his resignation and those of the rest of the national selection committee to the board.
