Sri Lanka flood victims to get EU aid

Feb 15, 2011 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's flood victims, some of whom were recovering from a recent war will get 105 million rupees (700,000 euros) of food aid from the European Union through the World Food Program. "The needs of the flood-affected communities are great and WFP still faces considerable shortfalls in our funding" WFP’s country representative in Sri Lanka, Adnan Khan said in a statement.

"Before the floods, many conflict-affected families were attempting to resume agricultural activities after returning to their homes.

"Now they have been hit by another calamity and will need food and other humanitarian assistance in the months ahead if they are to fully rebuild their lives."

The donation comes from the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO) department. EU's ambassador Bernard Savage said the floods were the second to strike the people in the past two months and they may not be over yet.
