March 30, 2007 (LBO) – Sri Lanka added 16 more government department websites on the internet Thursday to make it easier for the public to get information, officials said. The websites, run by the Information and Communications Technology Agency (ICTA), are enabled in all three languages, Sinhala, Tamil and English.
The government should increase its reach within the country so that the people can contact officials easily and get their needs addressed, LalithWeeratunga, secretary to President Mahinda Rajapakse, told the launch ceremony.
œPeople come to government departments and ministries because they are the only places they can get what they need. Therefore, increasing connectivity helps everyone, even the ministries.
Information Communications Technology (ICT) literacy rates are still low in Sri Lanka but have doubled to 18 percent today from only 9.8 percent in 2005 because of increasing market reach.
Increased ICT penetration will also help to reduce telecommunication costs, Weeratunga said.
