The World Bank handed out Rs. 4 million of grant money directly to eight non-governmental organizations recently.
This model of directly supporting community-based work is a new concept promoted by the World Bank who in the past has only directly lent to governments.rn

rnThe bank says there were over 300 applications of which they chose 8 projects for the grant ranging from helping the differently abled to aiding families of migrant workers.rn

rnThe small grants program is aimed at empowering civil society organizations to play a wider role in development work of the country.

The program has a proven track record in other developing countries around the world by taking some of the smaller burdens off the central governments.rn
